A '9-1-1' call for Hershey on Fox TV series

Postcard sent to the fictional Hershey General Hospital on Hemlock Avenue on the Fox series “9-1-1.”

Our Avenues of Hershey Tee has prompted discussions with customers about a second version, perhaps one that focused on our hometown’s tree-named streets.

There’s Elm, Linden, Maple, Beech, Cedar, Chestnut.

And now there’s Hemlock.

Hemlock Avenue doesn’t really exist, but it does on Fox TV’s “9-1-1,” which happens to be a favorite in the Stay household.

Season 4, Episode 5, “Buck Begins,” which aired on Feb. 15, reveals the origin story of firefighter Evan Buckley (played by Oliver Stark) and notes that he and his sister, Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) grew up in Hershey. Years later, Maddie is an ER nurse at the fictional Hershey General Hospital (there is a Milton S. Hershey Medical Center).

A family secret surrounding the death of a third sibling from juvenile leukemia prompts Evan to head out on his own. Maddie is tempted to join him and remains in Hershey and in an abusive marriage.

Evan stays in touch with Maddie via a series of postcards from wherever he is living at that moment. On screen, Maddie holds up a mailing from Georgia. We can read the postcard over her shoulder:

Dear Maddie,

Bet you’re surprised to hear from me. So I'm done being mad at you. Mostly, I’ve been bouncing up and down the East Coast for a few months now. Picking up some odd jobs. Haven’t found my place yet but I’ve met some cool people. Though not as cool as you. I miss you.

Evan

P.S. I’m sending these to the hospital cuz I don’t trust Doug not to toss them in the trash. Have you left him yet?

The postcard is addressed to 1500 Hemlock Ave., Hershey, PA 17033. That is Hershey’s correct ZIP Code.

It’s unclear how Hershey ended up with a minor part in 9-1-1. Hershey had a 2019 cameo in ABC’s “The Good Doctor,” while Hersheypark garnered a mention in a 2002 episode of CBS’ “King of Queens.”

I’m not sure whether we’ll come out with a new tee featuring Hershey’s tree-named streets. But if we do, maybe we’ll throw in Hemlock just to see if locals are paying attention.

You know, as a way to keep the discussion going.
