Milton Thomas Garvin moved to the city of Lancaster as a teen-ager, becoming an errand boy at an East King Street dry goods store. Garvin bought the store in 1894 and renamed it M.T. Garvin & Co. The self-described “store for the thrifty” operated for more than 100 years (“next door to the court house”) until closing in 1975.
