With the proliferation of craft beers today, it’s easy to overlook the fact that breweries numbered in the thousands before Prohibition. Helb’s Keystone Brewery operated at King and Queen streets in downtown York, Pa., from 1873 to 1950. A 1913 article in the Harrisburg Telegraph newspaper said Helb’s was a leader in replacing horses with electric vehicles for delivery. A 1939 newspaper ad touted the company’s “Mr. Adolph Hartman, our master brewer from the old school of four decades” and his new pilsner: “Pure as sunlight, sparkling as spring water, wholesome and really good.” We’ll drink to that!
