Sprenger Famous Red Rose Beer Tee

Born in Reading, Pa., in 1829, John A. Sprenger started in the brewery business at age 10, working with his father. In 1857, he built a brewery and saloon on East King Street, Lancaster, which he sold in 1873, according to “A History of Brewing in Lancaster County, Legal and Otherwise.” He leased and ultimately bought and expanded a brewery at Lime and Locust streets that became Lancaster’s largest.

The Excelsior Brewery, as it was known, operated until 1951, its tanks sold for scrap in 1952. The complex was razed in 1965.
